14" x 20" Charcoal on 90 lb. paper.
All thanks go to bionic7 [link] for allowing me to use his gorgeous artwork to produce my own. This was one of the most difficult drawings I've done in quite some time. Getting the halo and cross to 'glow' via charcoal seemed next to impossible but I think I managed to do a decent job of it. I'm also happy with the likeness to Mr. Casteels himself. Titled 'The Seventh Archangel' in reference to the '7' in bionic's name (giving credit where credit is due, of course) and the 'archangel' because bionic7's original deviation has 'angel' in the title--a bit of a play on the fact that this piece wouldn't exist if bionic7's didn't. A few serious deviations from the original: the wings, which I wanted to appear as though they were fading or somewhat ghostly to counter the dynamic appearance of the figure in the image, and I omitted the heart and decay upon the chest and opted to simply darken that part out. Um um um... about two nights work. Average for me. Thank you again, Alex. Oh! Full view please! This one needs a full view for sure. Original available for purchase. Note me for pricing. |

lil bonnie lee wishes you lovely artists, all the best in your creativity..
very nice work with the charcoal. i like the fact that you cropped instead of doing the whole image...it's more interesting to look at this way. it's very stylized, which covers the normal points that i might make suggestions about - i get that harshness of line is intentional here. the only two things then that i could seriously mention would be a) his irises...would it be possible to lighten the colored section just a *hair* to make them stand out more, and b) his nipples - it might just be the pic/scan, but they don't appear to have as much depth as they might.
all in all, you haven't won me to the dark side, but you have executed this piece very well.

yeah, i was saying that i understand your use of hard lines, so that wouldn't be something i'd be likely to pick on.
it's brilliant, goddamn it.
