Artist's Comments

It's rare that I can't pick apart one of my pieces.
This is one of those rare times.
I'm completely satisfied with this. Thank god.

There's a story behind this piece, from the title to the poem.
The poem is written by Damien Echols who currently resides on Arkansas death row for a crime he did not commit nearly thirteen years ago. I'm fortunate enough to have been granted permission by Damien to use his poetry in my work. The poem reads as follows:

Her eyes are chained angels,
Glittering and unconscious
Of the growing distance between us.

Her lips move,
Issuing a murmur
Like voices from a depth
That aren't quite loud enough to hear.

Against the winter sky
A murder of crows
Wheels and turns

The poem is titled Estranged, hence my title here.
The original of this is going to San Francisco this May, where it will be displayed at the Skeleton Key art auction benefiting the West Memphis Three. [Henry Rollins, Jello Biafra, and Jonathan Richman will be speaking at the auction, so it's completely exciting. :excited:] All proceeds will be donated to Damien's defense fund. So for those of you who have been quietly wondering how I'm helping the cause, this is one of my donations.

On a sidenote, whlie working on this piece I realized that what had come to be on paper looked very eerily like a friend of mine, Tessa. I still can't look at this and not get weirded out and run away. :giggle:

In life do we really have a choice? Up-river or down? It really isn't that simple. We might choose to swim Up-river and get swept out to sea.
