1984 by cinquain 1984 by cinquain
There is little that can move me as rapidly as a good 80's song.
Simple Minds. Depeche Mode. Tears For Fears. Prince. The Cure.
My moods are no more than mere rhythmic reactions.
To me, they are gospel. Religion. Faith.
I raise my hands and worship in the church of 1984.

Charcoal on 90 lb. paper.
16" x 22"
Minor Curve Adjustment in PS
Ref. Model: Unknown (found on a random model site years ago)

Thank you all for your comments and support.

amazing. i really really like how you did this. actually makes me want to mimic your style in this. whats the word for it.... dunno.
its kinda half abstract to like more solid blocks of texture/shading?

How would you describe it, i was trying to explain to it to my art teacher but I couldn't heh.
and as far as the process goes. any tips? cuz charcoal on vellum is tough to get that smooth and good looking at times. or maybe its just been awhile since I used charcoal...

Sheesh! My charcoal is approx. half as good as your charcoal :tears: If I may ask, what kind of charcoal do you use and how do you begin your pieces? :giggle: (Do you just randomly put down charcoal from a ref. first or sketch it out and then apply charcoal?)

I use compressed charcoal sticks and I always start with a sketch from reference, almost always a 2:1 ratio (100% bigger than the original reference image being used).

hummm, thanks! and cool. I think I just have a problem making tiny little lines with my charcoal, and I usually don't even start out with a sketch... but you do what you have to do >.<
Thanks again for actually answering!

I like this style, it's edgy, loving the blurred hair and I love the title. The 80's are really enjoying their comeback.

I really love this portrait. I must admit, I'm not an overt fan of the 80s, but the blame lies on people at school. Nyeh, they kind of kill it for the rest of us.

It is nice as usual but all the white space is bothering me in this one for some reason. Don't be fooled or anything though, I do envy you like a lot of people that watch you coz of the way you can handle charcoal.

(I think I had that same haircut when I was 15 but I had some weird bright violet hair color going on instead.)
